This Moses and Red Sea craft featuring a simple paper plate offers a tangible way to understand the bible through a hands-on crafting experience.
By transforming a paper plate into a dramatic biblical scene with Moses and Red Sea, your truly giving children a tactile way to visualize the miracle.
Moses Parting the Red Sea Printable
Moses parting the Red Sea printable activity brings the miracle of Exodus to life, making it a favorite for Sunday school, homeschooling, or a rainy-day storytelling.
Using a paper plate, children can assemble and hold a physical reality of blue waters and dry land and the prophet Moses being led to safety.
For a child, the idea of a massive ocean splitting in two is awe-inspiring.
Bringing that miracle to life doesn’t require a Hollywood budget-just a paper plate, our printable template, and a few other handy supplies along with a little bit of imagination.
One of the things I love about the design of this Moses and Red Sea craft is that the parting waves resemble a heart.
I added the bible verse scripture Isaiah 43:2, because it’s important to remember God is always with us; just as he was with Moses when he passed through the waters.
Materials:
Moses and Red Sea printable Template (grab it at the bottom of this post)
White cardstock paper (recommended for durability)
Coloring Supplies (crayons, markers, or colored pencils)
Brown unbleached parchment paper
Glitter (optional)
Instructions for Moses and Red Sea Craft:
First, print out your Moses and Red Sea printable template. If you are new to crafting with printables, check out our guide to printables.
Color
Have your child color the Moses and Red Sea image, along with small story tag.
Cut
Grab your scissors and start parting those waves! Cut out both items on the template. Carefully cut when going between the waves and smaller sections.
Prepare Paper Plate
Take your paper plate and cut it in half.
Trace the outline of your plate with the parchment paper and cut it out.
Staple the parchment paper top edges to the back edges of the plate.
Trim up any sections all the way around the paper plate so it has a clean look.
Add a little glue (or you can staple) the front section of the parchment paper to the front of the plate so it’s fastened to the front of the plate.
Glue
Apply a good amount of glue to the back of the Moses cutout along with the story tag. Press the story tag towards the bottom of the plate. Then press on the Moses image above, so it looks as if he is crossing dry land and the sea has been parted.
We decided to add some glitter to our Moses and Red Sea craft. It turned out really cute! Kids love glitter, plus it makes everything sparkle!
How You Can Incorporate the Story with the Moses and Red Sea Craft
As your child is coloring and assembling their Moses Parts Red Sea craft, you can read Exodus 14 to them.
The problem: The Israelites were trapped between pharaoh’s army and the sea.
The Command: God told Moses, “Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water”.
When teaching this to kids, the goal is to bridge the gap between an ancient text and their modern lives.
The Takeaway: No matter how big the “ocean” in our lives seems, God can make a way where there is no way. He is always with us! This is such relief to know that we are not alone in our struggles. He sees us. This is a life lesson your kids will certainly treasure.
Not just completing a fun craft but the meaning that is behind it. This Moses and the Red Sea craft provide a visual anchor for this massive theological concept.
Further Deeping the Story-Discussion points
The Impossible Choice: Ask the kids how they would feel with a desert behind them, an army chasing them, and a deep sea in front. This builds empathy for the Israelites’ fear.
The Pillar of Cloud and Fire: Explain that God didn’t just part the water; he stood between the people and their enemies as a protector.
Moses Had Trust: Remind the kids that Moses didn’t have the power to split the sea; his power came from obeying God’s instruction to move forward.
With this parting the Red Sea craft, children will gain a wonderful reminder that no obstacle is too big for God!
Final Thoughts
Crafting with faith in mind doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive to be impactful.
It truly makes our day to see your kids having fun and learning about the faith! Our kids have so much fun making them as well!
