When choosing your flowers, you will need to first identify the spot they will be planted so you can note which category you will need to shop. They will either fall under shade, part-sun, or full sun. Determine the right one so they get the perfect amount of sunlight or shade they require. You’ll also want to check the plant tag or look up the plant description (a quick google search could do it) so that you can find the USDA Hardiness zone for your plant choice. This is important because you want to make sure your Perennial picks will survive the winters in your region. When we planted our very first garden, some of ours did not come back the next year because of this reason. We had a harsh winter. Sometimes you get good gardening advice passed to you and sometimes you get to find out for yourself. We now know not to choose this type of perennial for our flowers beds since it won’t make it through our cold season. The Ice plant perennial is considered a succulent. It gets daisy-looking flowers and makes an amazing ground cover. It loves to climb and spreads tremendously. It’s been known to grow down our retaining wall when we don’t pull it back. It requires full sun and grows 24″ wide at mature spread.

Okay, this one is not a flower but I included it on the list because of it’s beautiful color and attractive tails coming out of the top. The purple reddish color adds so much warmth and looks great in any garden!

Knock out Roses are pretty full-sun soakers and can reach 3 to 4 feet tall and wide.

Balloon Flower
Another low maintenance pick is the Balloon flower. Again, this one enjoys full sun but can tolerate part shade. It can reach 1– 2 1/2 feet tall and 1–1 1/2 feet wide.
Black Eyed Susan
The Black Eyed Susan is a popular choice by many gardeners. Known for it’s bright yellow flower with a dark center. It reaches 2-3 feet tall and 1-2 feet wide and likes to dwell in full sun although they can handle partial shade.
Hardy Hens & Chicks
Hens and Chicks are succulents that thrive really well in rock gardens as well as in containers. Needing full sun and maturing to 6–12 inches tall and 6–18 inches wide.

Aha! The tall tropical-looking Canna lily is a full sun lover (although they will survive in the shade) that can grow anywhere from a few feet tall to 10 feet tall based on the variety.

Autumn Joy Sedum
The Autumn Joy blooms in the fall months, hence it’s name. This is from late September through October. These flowers can get a height of 1 1/2 feet with a 2 foot spread.

Giles Van Hees Speedwell
Also a care-free sun soaking perennial, is the Giles Van Hees Speedwell, which blooms from spring to autumn. It will also manage some partial shade. It can extend to 6 inches tall and 8-10 inches wide in maturity.

Russian Sage
The low maintenance Russian Sage plant produces it’s best blooms in full sun. It generally gets 3-5 feet in height and 2-3 feet wide.

Barbatus Red Dianthus
The pretty Dianthus is another easy pick on the list. When planting, full sun is important for these perennials. There are other varieties that fall under the annual category so you will need to make sure you get the perennial one to reassure they come back. They grow 5 inches- 3 feet tall, all depending on variety of the flower.

Hosta
Ideally, these flowering plants like a happy medium amount of sun and shade (full shade to part sun) depending on the type. Their size is anywhere ranging from 6 to 48 inches tall and 10 inches to 6 feet wide.
Hydrangea
It’s been said Hydrangeas need at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight. Some in particular, need a little more or a little less. There are also a few classifications that thrive in full shade in which the climate is a factor. Just do your homework on this beauty. As far as the size goes, it all depends on the species.
