Easy Step By Step Instructions: Getting Your Photo Ready

You will need to choose a photo you want to use and save it to your computer. I used a photo from Facebook and just saved it to mine. TIP: You will want to choose a good clear quality photo.

Next Step, Go to Canva.com ,In the upper right hand corner you will need to log in or create a new account if you don’t already have one. It’s completely free to use this design tool.

Once you get signed in and ready to get started creating, click “create a design” then “custom dimensions”. You will then choose the “inches” from the drop down & type in the blank area 8 x 10 then click “create new design” right underneath.

You will now need to upload your photo to the blank page you created. Click the “upload” button on the left hand side of the screen and upload your image from your device.

Hold and drag the circles on the edge of the photo to adjust the photo size to fill the page. Then without clicking anything else hit “crop”. Crop your image just around the frame of the face then hit “done” at the top left. This step is simply to save on ink (since we just want the face). In order to not waste paper, I redid this “uploading & cropping” step and fit several pictures (I fit four) on a single sheet being sure to leave enough space above and underneath for the adding of any extra elements to the photo like I had added the hat and beard. Make sure they are approx the same size face as well.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                how to make lumberjack cupcake toppers 1

Adding Your Theme Photo “Extras”

Add A Beard To A Photo

Your photo is now ready to add any “extras” to fit the occasion. I added a lumberjack beard to go with my party theme! You could add a graduation cap to your photo, a birthday party hat are just some ideas.
Click “elements” on the left hand side and use your search bar to type in “beard” (or whatever you’re looking for) then hit enter. You will see lots of different options but you’ll want to choose one without the crown symbol next to it because we want the free version options. I chose the orange looking one on the fifth row down (we will change the color here shortly).

Once you click on the one that you want it will pop up on your photo. Drag and adjust to fit the face of your image. Use the circles once again to size it as needed. Now go ahead and change the color if you want by clicking the color box to top left of the photo. I changed my beard to black. If the beard (or the one you chose) goes onto the white space, it’s okay since You will be cutting these out as cupcake toppers.

Add Hat To Photo

Next I added a lumberjack-looking hat! Like before, click the search bar and erase the beard term and type “hat” & press enter. Of course if this is not your theme add anything else you want to add to your photo in this step. The hat that I chose is way down there so you will have to do some scrolling. I think I counted down to the 64th row or so. Again, click on the one you want.
Now go ahead and resize and fit it to your photo face. Use the arrows to angle it or center it with your face on your picture. You may have to play around with it little bit and do some adjusting and resizing to get everything to fit and centered. When everything looks how you want it, go up to the top right hand side of the screen and give it a name then go ahead and click Download. TIP: I like to download to PNG instead of Jpeg image because the quality seems to be better.

The last step is cutting them out and taking a piece of tape, and taping the back of them to the toothpick so you can stick them in your cupcakes.

You don’t need to spend a ton of money and order custom cupcake toppers when you can print them out at home. I’m blown away by how easy and fun they are and I can’t believe that I never thought of making them before. I hope this little diy trick makes your next party planning a little easier and a little more personalised too. Nothing beats a personalised cupcake that has a photo your party guests can take home with them and remember such an eventful day. For me, this was my son’s first birthday. A very special day, I must say.
