May is the month devoted to Our Lady. For the Month of May, we also wrapped up our May Crowning craft that is quite adorable and one of my favorite Mary crafts we’ve done so far. My girls loved cutting and gluing all the flowers around the Blessed Mother.

That brings me to this miraculous medal craft to celebrate Our lady of the Miraculous Medal!

The Miraculous Medal is a catholic sacramental based on a 1830 vision of the Virgin Mary to Saint Catherine Laboure in Paris. This religious necklace is associated with protection and great graces to those who wear it with faith and devotion.

If you asked my girls, this Mary Medal necklace they’d probably say is their favorite because little girls love to wear jewelry especially if they get to make their very own necklace. My girls are 3 years old and 4 years old and did this Mary craft without needing much help from me at all except for making the holes to pull the necklace string through.

What’s on the Miraculous Medal?

On the front Mary stands on a globe as Queen of Heaven and earth crushing a serpent which refers to victory over evil. The prayer around the miraculous medal has the inscription “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.”

On the back there is a large “M” for Mary surmounted by a cross, symbolizing Jesus’ sacrifice and beneath is the sacred heart with thorns and the Immaculate heart which is pierced. The twelve stars signifies the twelve apostles and the church.

They usually see me wearing my miraculous medal necklace and I thought how sweet if they had one so that led me to get creative and allow the girls to be part of the process. They are all in when it comes to something they get to make or color!

Miraculous Medal Craft For Kids

Your child or student can color their very own miraculous medal then cut and glue them together to create a back and a front Mary Medal.

You can definitely encourage a gold or silver metallic crayon or marker to give it more of a medal appearance or just let your kiddos get creative with the colors. Totally optional.

They will be so proud to wear and show off their Medal craft to everyone! This is a great hands-on way to get the kids involved in the faith and teach them about the miraculous medal devotion while also fostering a love for our Mother Mary.

Download and print our Miraculous Medal printable template

color both pieces of the medal

cut them out

glue them together so you have a front side and a back side

use a hole punch to put a hole in the top center of the Marian Medal

cut a long piece string

starting from the back of the medal, pull your string through the holes

place it around child’s neck and tie a knot where needed.

Tip: When cutting the string you may want to make it extra-long for your child. This is so when you tie a knot, it’s long enough for the child to pull over their head and take it off whenever they want.

To keep this religious necklace safe for years (the perfect little keepsake), I highly recommend laminating it! This helpful hint is worth the extra minute to be sure this Catholic printable stays crisp and waterproof.

Conclusion

I am going to conclude with a beautiful devotional prayer proposal that your child can pray while children hold their medal. Holding the Catholic printable Marian Necklace, you can assist kids in a Miraculous Medal novena for children which is a nine-day prayer where kids ask Mary for special help. Instead of long, complex prayers, it focuses on simple trust and the “M-A-R-Y” method.

Catholic Printable & The 9-day Routine

For nine days in a row, have the child hold their medal and say a short prayer. You can use this simple version below.

“Dear Mother Mary, you promised to give great graces to those who wear this medal and ask for help. I trust in your love. Please pray for me and help me with (state intention). O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. Amen”

The “M-A-R-Y” Meaning behind the Prayer & Miraculous Medal

To help them remember why they are praying for nine days, explain it like this here:

M- Mother: She is our heavenly mother who listens.

A- Always: She is always ready to help us.

R- Request: We bring our specific needs to her.

Y- Yes: We trust her “yes” to God and her “yes” to accompanying us.

Why Nine Days?

Explain to the children that nine days represents the time the apostles spent praying before the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost. It teaches them patience and persistence with their prayers.
