Why You’ll Love This Feast Day Craft

Our kids really enjoy crafts, so as a Catholic mom, I love incorporating them with our beautiful faith which is such a treasure to hand on to our little ones.

Therefore, I am always gathering new ideas for faith-centered printables and crafts to celebrate these wonderful Catholic feast days.

Here’s what’s to love about Our Lady of Guadalupe art:

Inexpensive and Accessible:

You likely already have everything you need in your kitchen and craft bin. If you do have to make a run to the store for the penne noodle pasta you get plenty for a small price.

If you are utilizing the craft for a classroom or Sunday school, you can set the pasta in little bowls at each station for little hands to grab close by.

Supports Fine Motor Skills:

Placing pasta noodles along radiating lines requires focus, precision, and hand-eye coordination for little fingers.

Deeply Symbolic:

This Our Lady of Guadalupe art naturally opens the door to discuss the miraculous image left on St. Juan Diego’s tilma in 1531.

History of Our Lady of Guadalupe

The Story Behind the Craft

Before diving into the glue and dry pasta, it’s always wonderful to share a brief background with your kids while they craft.

In 1531, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill in Mexico. When the bishop asked Juan Diego for a sign to prove the apparition was real, Mary instructed Juan Diego to gather roses in his tilma (cloak).

When Juan Diego opened his cloak before the bishop, the roses fell away, revealing a miraculous image of Our Lady imprinted directly on the fabric.

In the image, Mary is wrapped in a star-speckled blue mantle, standing atop a crescent moon, and surrounded by radiant rays of sunlight (a mandorla). This craft focuses on recreating those iconic golden rays using dry penne pasta!

If your child is very young, don’t worry about staying in the lines or using traditional colors. Let them express their creativity freely.
