Upgrades Featured in Our Fun Basement Playroom Designs
I am sharing a small tour today, to show you how our basement playroom turned out. The centerpiece of our basement playroom is the custom wooden jungle gym we built from scratch. We constructed a sturdy structured playground tailored specifically to our basement area.
The jungle gym features a rock wall, a built-in slide, designated upper and lower areas for play zones and monkey bars underneath. A few other basement playroom designs that came into play were stuffed animal storage, bright modern wall stickers, and ceiling mounted swings.
We’ve been in our home for over two years now and finally getting around to making our finished basement feel more like a kid’s space, since that’s where our children spend the most time. We decided to give the room a full overhaul.

Indoor Jungle Gym (The Tour)
Some things our children mentioned adding to the kids room, which we were able to accomplish, was a big slide. Our boy wanted a rock wall and some monkey bars. That’s when we got started pondering on basement playroom designs and building them an indoor jungle gym!
Playroom Platform
We began making over the basement play area by building an indoor playground platform. With this playroom setup, the kids have play areas on the upper and lower half. We got the slide attached which allowed for a little hidden area underneath where our son likes to store his mower. Then added push puck lights for extra lighting under there.
We laid a playroom rug on the upper platform floor and put a table and chairs set up there for the kids.
Our little girl likes to put the stuffed animals in the chairs and do pretend tea parties too.
Kids DIY Climbing Wall
In our indoor playground at home, we also built a kids rock climbing wall going up to the top of our wooden jungle gym platform. Our three and four year old get right up the rock wall and love the challenge of climbing, however, our two year old had a bit of trouble so we added handlebars (they came with our rock set) and scrap wood to make it toddler approved, and now it’s perfect for her, too!
Our Indoor Jungle Gym Cargo Net Railing
We used wood and cargo netting to make a DIY kids playground safety net railing to keep them from falling.
We got creative and used the extra cargo net slack on one end to make custom stuffed animal storage. It turned out so cute and they can just pull them out or go through the side to get to them.
You can fit the stuffed animals on both sides, so it holds a lot! Good thing because our kids have a ton of stuffed animals that are usually just thrown all over.
Play Room Safety Outlets
I mentioned earlier that we moved our TV to another wall in order to build our DIY indoor playground, but it left us with two outlets on the top floor of our wooden jungle gym, and since we have little toddlers, we bought these safety outlet cover boxes just to be extra safe and so we wouldn’t have to worry while they were playing on the upper floor.
Playroom Paint Color
We tossed around painting the walls a few bright colors. We ended up painting the basement playroom walls Sherwin Williams Snowbound (a white shade) in eggshell sheen.
Wall Stickers For Kids
To make it a bright colorful playroom that would wow the kids, we added some modern rainbow wall stickers to pop against the white.
Playroom Kids Monkey Bars
When asking our son for some fun room ideas he mentioned monkey bars. We mounted ours underneath the platform with some leftover scrap wood we had laying around for our little monkeys to climb.
Our two-year-old is a huge fan of Cocomelon, if you couldn’t tell. She loves sitting in this little chair with either books or her JJ doll. All the other toys are in these two pink toy boxes.
Other Playroom Basement Designs and Ideas: Swing & Swing Ladder
To make it an extra fun, underneath our lower ceiling, we mounted a kids playground swing and a swinging climbing ladder using swing hooks.
