Traditional foam pumpkins are dollar store staples every fall. While they are super budget-friendly, they don’t exactly scream high-end home decor. Thankfully, a simple can of spray paint can completely transform cheap dollar store pumpkins into sleek, chic accents that rival expensive boutique finds.
Crafty DIY Pumpkins
I recently picked up some $1 foam pumpkins and thought they looked adorable, but I didn’t really care for the colors and the stems looked cheap and weren’t attached very well at all. I believe it was a target bulls eye purchase but if you can’t find them, you can certainly use dollar tree foam pumpkins.
In the attempt to fancy them up so they looked higher end, I decided to spray paint them with a stone texture spray paint!

Supplies You’ll Need for these DIY Pumpkins
Styrofoam pumpkins– try to look for faux pumpkins that have distinctive shapes and lines, so it won’t look like a concrete blob.
Copper elbows (If you choose to do the stem)
How To Make these DIY Pumpkins
These crafty DIY pumpkins are super simple to throw together. I just sprayed it with a few coats of stone spray paint. You’ll want to make sure it fully dries in between each coat. Allow plenty of time, this spray paint seems to take longer to dry than other spray paints because of the texture.
Now that it’s dry, you can hot glue on the copper elbows to resemble a stem if you choose to do so. The elbow pieces were super cheap at my hardware store at less than $1 a piece.
My DIY pumpkins worked out fantastic because I did not have to even pull out the stems, they fit right over top. If your stems are too big you can just remove them and add the copper elbow. There was one stem that I had to cut down.
The easiest way it worked was by sliding it over top and hot glue the faux stem and the copper piece together by just going inside. You could very well just glue from the bottom of the elbow fitting though. I was trying to avoid seeing any of the hot glue.
Fall Table Decor Ideas
I really love how these DIY pumpkins turned out. I ended up placing them in my dough bowl with some greenery for an easy fall table centerpiece.
Spray paint can really transform cheap looking pumpkins and give them a whole new look. I hope this inspired you to give spray painting a try on your fall decor, especially if you have some fall items laying around that you can completely overhaul with a can of spray paint! No need to spend a bunch of money on new decor!
