See how a boring greige kitchen wall became a gorgeous modern farmhouse kitchen feature wall.
We love us some shiplap. Meanwhile, Ya know, while we’re waiting on Chip and Joanna to stop by, we added some to the back of our island, completed a shiplap backsplash and now were putting some finishing touches on a huge Kitchen Accent Wall. These kitchen accent wall ideas will inspire you to get started on one in your own kitchen!
The Blank Before
When we first bought this house, three years ago, the open floor plan sold me. I mean five bedrooms was a bonus too.
The Kitchen and the living room is one big L shape design.
And then there’s this support stair wall that runs from the kitchen through the small dining room area that runs into the living room. That’s our accent wall, folks. I knew from the day we painted it, this boring blah of a wall needed something other than just a coat of paint. Then the husband agreed, some shiplap was the answer making this wall pop against all the other greige walls.
This wall is rather difficult to get a photo of, it’s quite large.
Here’s the end of the wall from the living room side which leads to upstairs.
The start of this wall in the kitchen has you come through the garage. You’ll see in the photo below, an open doorway (right behind the island) which leads down to the basement as well as a small little entryway area (where you see our shoes) to the right of the garage door.
Here’s a better view of the tucked away entry. It’s a catch-all so it’s not that fancy.
A DIY kitchen remodel came into play and the entryway wall that was once here is now gone and looks straight down to the basement!
That eliminated the need for the doorway on our accent wall. The open doorway on our kitchen accent wall eventually got filled in with drywall sheeting. Then we immediately got started on the shiplap.
Kitchen Feature Wall: A Farmhouse Accent Wall With Shiplap!
A Modern Farmhouse take on a large shiplap kitchen wall: The Transformation
After Photos
These first three photos were taken after hours so the camera take on my phone doesn’t give it the credit it deserves.
Once done, it was time to decorate and get some things on this shiplap accent wall in kitchen!
This is the new view of the wall from the kitchen angle by the garage.
and the view we have now from the side the stairs are on. Also peep our DIY board and batten living room wall.
Please excuse the toddler-proofed house in the background.
What Shiplap To Use For A Kitchen Accent Wall?
I have mentioned this before with working with some of our other well-known shiplap projects. I did a whole lot of research and weighed out what was easiest to work with and we chose this kind of Shiplap! They were already painted and ready to go! They have the fitted edges so when you put each board together, they create those perfect gaps and fit together like a puzzle peice due to the way you stack them. I’m so glad we went this route, I can’t tell you enough how super simple it was to create this large farmhouse Feature Wall. Another alternative to this kitchen design style is to use plywood for the shiplap boards which requires sanding and painting to prep.
What’s The Best Technique To Fill Shiplap Nail Gun Holes In Wood Accent Wall?
We tried patching the holes from the nail gun a couple different ways to see what worked best. Here’s another pro tip we learned-and it’s MAGIC!
We used this Crayon like product! It’s already white so all you need to do is fill in the hole. I wish I would have known about this little guy sooner! I seriously cannot recommend it enough. Watch it work!!
What You Need To Do
Before applying this amazing nail hole filler, use either a paper towel or an old rag and dampen with Mineral Spirits, wipe around the hole you plan on filling and the putty stick. Then go ahead and fill your hole. Then use the rag that had the mineral spirits on it and wipe over the hole to get a clean polished look.
How To Decorate A Kitchen Accent Wall
No-Fail (keep it simple) decorating Tips
Our Kitchen Wall Accents
Ahh, the kitchen…the heart of the home. But, how do we make it more homey. More often than not, empty walls beg to show off. A fresh painted accent wall or even a white shiplap wall can look stark. Leaving it to stare you right in the face. That’s the fabulous thing about wall decor. Rustic accents and modern farmhouse decor can add charm to a screaming wall. Here are some steps to no-fail wall decorating!
Incorporate A Coffee Bar Style Mug Rack
A Mug Rack is both pretty and functional for a kitchen wall space. It’s so fun decorating and adding your favorite mugs, especially these days, the oh’ so popular Rae Dunn which give off a classy modern farmhouse look.
Plants also can liven up a space. Throw up some greenery on your mug rack for an added look!
Hang Wall Arches
Wall Arches can help account for large areas on a wall.
For this look I combined two black arches on the side of a large mug rack for a bold piece.
Before adding the shiplap, I use to have three arches combined on this very wall.
Adding Wreaths is another great way to dress up your arches on your kitchen accent wall!
Mix and Match Materials (wood, metal, etc..)
Embrace Wood Tones
Wood brings warmth into the space. I mentioned a stark look earlier; well, wood piece choices will help you with that!
Include Metal Textures
Metal textures bring that rough and rustic look to a wall. Mix it with woods and you have gorgeous farmhouse decor.
Mirrors
Mirrors are another large decor piece you can’t go wrong with on a shiplap kitchen wall! They also make the room look bigger.
Other Ideas for decorating a Kitchen Accent Wall
Large Galvanized letters such as “EAT” or “KITCHEN”
