The weather was perfect over the weekend, not hot, and the sun was shining (for the most part)…so we finally got around to having our yearly garage sale.
You know ,the one I’ve been telling you we were going to have. And I’m sure you remember our garage filled with rocks!

Getting back to the garden, let’s take a trip from the garage to the front yard, Our front flower bed is currently in full maturity mode this early fall!
I wanted to share since fall has arrived, my firework grass has reached cat tail season when they all start coming out of the top and we had our lily flowers bloom!
Just a small throwback, the before photos if you will.
And below is the more recent after photos, which is the reason I am over the moon about tall flowering perennials in the garden because of the full blooming appearance it gives to the front of our home.
The flowers are looking gorgeous as ever and I cannot believe how tall they have grown.
THOSE Lilies are definitely as tall as me now! I almost think they are growing so fast and tall due to competing for the sun and completely taking over.
Another suggestion to add height and fill any empty spaces between your flower bed, besides planting tall flowering perennials, is to add tall garden decor.
Unless you’re plants get so tall and wide you can’t see it.

Here is a list of my tall Flowering perennial faves for any flower bed (featuring some from my own garden and other recommendations that are not).
These picks are mostly all regarded as low maintenance and drought tolerant since we are no experts, don’t have magical green thumbs or even a gardening trophy to back anything up. Just simply picking the right thriving plants is what it’s all about.

Phasion Canna Lily

The show stopping Phasion Canna Lily featured in my own garden grows anywhere from 3 foot tall to 6 foot tall and capable of getting even larger. They love soaking up full sun.

Russian Sage

The green foliage Russian Sage plant can get 3 to 5 feet tall. Another full sun soaker for this one. The direct sun allows them to produce the most abundance of flowers and grow sturdy stems.
Considered very easy grow, the Hardiness zone is (USDA zone that is) 5 to 9. Also considered to be deer resistant.

Wine & Rose Weigela
The Hummingbird-loving Wine and Rose flowering shrub gets 4 to 5 feet tall. This beauty will need full sun for maximum potential.
USDA hardiness Zones are 5 to 8.

Hydrangea

Another gorgeous choice, known as a tall flowering shrub, is the Hydrangea reaching up to 15 feet in height. Creating the perfect option for a garden backdrop or a phenomenal solution for privacy.
However, Hydrangeas like morning sun so direct hot afternoon sun would not be ideal. Part shade in the later parts of the day is best for growing.
They grow in hardiness zones 3 to 7.
Ninebark

Another shrub on the list of tall garden flowers is the Ninebark bush, which can reach 8 to 10 feet. Should be placed in a spot that has full sun to partial shade. However, it’s been said to flower best in full sun locations.
It is hardy in zones is 3-7.
Foxglove

The foxglove flower can get 6 feet. They thrive in full sun to a light shade. Is also rabbit resistant since critters stay away from this one which means you get to enjoy gorgeous long blooming summer flowers.
Their hardiness zone is 4-9.
Other Tall Perennials For Sun
Japanese Silver Ornamental Grass “Cosmopolitan”
While maybe not being known for a flower, another great pick for perennial height is Zebra grass. It has the potential, in the right conditions, to be 8 foot tall. We planted this one in our raised garden bed around patio.
Firework Fountain Ornamental Grass
Okay, this one is not exactly considered tall flowers but I included it on the list because of it’s beautiful color and attractive tails coming out of the top mentioned earlier. The purple reddish color adds so much warmth and looks great in any garden!
They Grow as big as 3 to 4 feet tall.
Prior to choosing a taller plant for extra privacy, we planted firework fountain grass in the back raised garden bed also.
