Let’s talk about Sherwin Williams On the Rocks, a popular light gray paint color and a view of how it looks on our interior doors in our home.
Sherwin Williams On The Rocks
On the Rocks Sherwin Williams (SW7671) is a warm, visually neutral and very versatile grey paint color that steers away from feeling cold and stony like some other gray colors potentially can. This is due to its slight muted undertones of taupe and purple in southern facing light and tends to give off hints of blue feeling a tad colder in northern facing light. For this reason, depending on what time of day, Sherwin Williams on the Rocks might appear differently at different times of the day in the home. However, it doesn’t come off as too much purple, taupe or hints of blue but a true gray.
SW on the rocks can ideally be a great paint color choice for almost any wall in the home, as well as cabinets and even interior doors, we can vouch for this, because we chose this very color for our own gray interior doors.
Grey Interior Doors
Dark grey and black interior door paint have been a big trend lately and I’m certainly a fan (we even painted our living room board and batten wall in our previous home a dark grey almost black looking color), but in our new home our kitchen cabinets are a light gray and our backsplash is also a gray subway tile. Our wall color throughout the living room, kitchen and dining room is Sherwin Williams City loft (flat) which is a neutral greige paint color chosen by our builder.
We wanted to keep the grey color theme and tie the grays in our kitchen with the rest of the living room since it’s one big open space. Then it dawned on us. Grey doors. We knew we were going to go with a grey door paint color, but what one? We landed on Sherwin Williams On the Rocks.
What Paint Color Goes Good With On The Rocks Sherwin Williams?
Since Sherwin Williams City loft is more of a softer beige (with hints of gray) paint color, we thought it would be perfect to pair it with a true gray and that was On the Rocks paint color; however, keep in mind while On the Rocks is a true gray there are still undertones peeking through, which all gray paint colors have dependent on lighting conditions. In my photos you will see how the two paint colors look together as coordinating colors and I think they complement each other so well. As well as the white trim color our builder also chose which is a specialized contractor color but compares most to Sherwin Williams Extra White (semi-gloss).
Three coordinating colors:
// Sherwin Williams City Loft (walls)
// Sherwin Williams Extra White (trim)
// Sherwin Williams On the Rocks (doors)
Slapping On Some Grey Door Paint
We quickly got started by taking off our pantry door (as well as the hardware) laying it on a table in the garage.
Before any door painting happened, we gave it a quick buffing with the orbital sander and wiped it down with a rag for a clean, ready to paint door surface.
Applied a second coat. Once it was dry then we flipped it over and repeated the other side. After the painted door was all dry, it was ready to re-hang and the hardware went back on.
Our Gray Doors
Although we are still in the process of painting doors, I wanted to show what On the Rocks paint color looks like thus far to help you determine if it would be right in your own home and/or perhaps for your interior painted doors. These pictures are untouched and non-edited, and I tried to take a few shots in different times of the day. Before committing to any paint color, sampling is always a good idea to see what it will truly look like on your wall or painted doors.
Before we decided to paint doors:

That pretty much sums up our Sherwin Willaims on the rocks grey interior doors. Painting Doors is one of the simplest ways to elevate the look of a room, even if you choose not to go with a bold color and paint your doors with a light gray such as SW on the rocks. I hope this paint color review was helpful and you love the color in your home just as much as we do. All opinions are our own and this was not sponsored in any way.
