Are you considering an easy approach to extending gutter downspouts in your yard? There are some options out there when it comes to downspout drainage ideas.

Heavy rain, pooled water, and soggy foundations are every homeowner’s nightmare and will send you searching for a fast solution. Reworking a flower bed design or landscaping feature is another reason for rerouting gutter downspouts.

Maybe that’s you trying to find some downspout extension ideas or an alternative that helps with diverting water from downspouts. Connecting a flexible hose to your downspout allows you to route rainwater anywhere you want-straight into flower beds, around delicate landscaping, or safely away from your foundation.

We were needing these same solutions too! Running into this very problem when designing our flower bed. We built our raised flower bed in front of our home, and we choose to wrap it around to the side of our porch which ran right into the side gutter.

This was an easy fix! Let us show you the process of extending gutter downspouts and what materials to use.

Extending Gutter Downspouts: Our Dilemma

This photo will give you a better idea of why we needed to extend our downspout. This is before our raised flower beds came into play but here is where the rain gutter downspout is located right behind the porch pillar. Since our flower bed will be raised, this definitely interfered with our plans.

In order to get around this we went with an easy way for how to reroute our gutter downspout. Also known as a downspout extension. We headed to Lowes and bought a flexible downspout hose and a downspout adapter to attach to our rain gutter drain.

It was a quick easy install. Firstly, removing the bottom piece off of our gutter downspout.

We slid the adapter on first, screwed it in with a socket hex drive sheet metal screw, drill socket, and connected the flexible pipe.

(We added a zip tie for extra strength, but you really do not need it at all).

In our case, our gutter drain hose will be buried underground underneath our raised flower bed so we cut a hole where the drain water can flow out. Keep in mind if you commit to this that water only flows downhill. Ensure your hose stays on a continuous downward slope away from the house to prevent water from backing up into the gutter.

Final Thoughts

Here are some final views of our gutter drain routed into the ground and exiting throughout our landscaping. After we finished it up, we added all the dirt so the gutter downspout extension hose would be buried underground. It just made so much sense to bring the gutter downspout in the flower bed so that it didn’t put a damper on our beautiful garden bed and it was a super simple project to accomplish.

Extending gutter downspouts doesn’t require complex underground drainage systems or ugly plastic tubes. With a simple downspout hose adapter attachment along with the flexible hose, you can protect your home’s foundation and clear the space for beautiful landscaping results!

Besides crossing off this drainage solution around our landscape we built a DIY privacy wall and DIY railing with composite decking boards on our front porch. The curb appeal is really starting to come together. Grab the easy how-to for these outdoor projects on the links provided.
